Second Season of ‘Naked Brothers’ Starts Tonight!

nbb.jpgAll middle-aged folks who grumble that good clean fun has been drained out of rock music can have their faith restored by watching the second-season premiere tonight of Nickelodeon’s “The Naked Brothers Band.”

Even the name is for fun. The Naked Brothers, who are fully clothed, are Nat Wolff, 13, and Alex Wolff, 10. They lead a teen band that sings the kind of melodic pop songs that have been a gold mine for their colleagues like Hannah Montana.

Tonight’s premiere introduces two of those songs, both written and sung by Nat Wolff. The first, “Mystery Girl,” could have come out of the Brill Building 45 years ago. The second, “I Don’t Want to Go to School,” isn’t the Sex Pistols, but has a reassuring dash of rock rebellion.

The music, however, is just one element of the “Naked Brothers” series, a “mockumentary” on the lives of these young rockers.

Most of the show is about dramas, crises and great moments with their friends.

Nat, for instance, has a thing for an older woman: Rosalina, who’s in the band and who has moved up to high school, while Nat’s still in middle school. He invites her to a middle school party where the band is going to play, but then it turns out it’s the same night as the high-school prom. When she gets a prom invitation, Nat assumes she’d rather go to the prom, so he sort of pushes her into doing that, only, omigod, that isn’t what she really wanted - so she gets like really annoyed at him and well, you get the idea. Adolescent lives have a lot of run-on sentences in them.

The show is also packed with side jokes, including a teacher who’s outraged that someone cleaned up the grafitti in the boys’ restroom. That was part of the school’s cultural legacy, he says, and when a couple of kids confess, he sends them to the restroom with markers to re-create it.

“The Naked Brothers Band” captures the tone and rhythm of adolescence, giving it street cred for the young and demystifying it for the old.

Besides, you can dance to it.
